
WHAT IS NERVOUS SYSTEM REGULATION?
The nervous system controls many of the body’s key functions — including heart rate, breathing, and digestion.
A well-regulated nervous system helps us move smoothly between states of activity and rest, tension and calm.
Nervous system regulation is the ability to shift flexibly between these states in response to daily stressors.
A balanced system can spring back from challenges with ease — like a rubber band returning to its shape.
A dysregulated system, however, may get “stuck” in stress responses such as fight-or-flight or shutdown, making it harder to recover and feel at ease.
Why It Matters
According to Dr. Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory, our nervous system shapes how we respond to and experience the world.
When it’s balanced, we feel safe, connected, and calm. When it’s out of balance, everything — from our mood to our health — can be affected.
When the Nervous System Is Dysregulated, You May Experience:
